Sightseeing in Rome

After our more relaxed arrival, for our first full day in Rome we decided to get those step counters up, and see as much of the sites as we could.

With the sun shining, we set off across the river, gazing at the sites along the way.

First stop on our list was Piazza Navona; a buzzy atmospheric square, which is home to the Fountain of the Four Rivers. Two other fountains mark the ends of the square, and make excellent perches for drinking in the atmosphere...or just posing.

The Fountain of the Four Rivers, one of Bernini's masterpieces, takes centre stage.

Four incredibly detailed figures make up the sculpture, each representing- you guessed it- four rivers; the Ganges, the Nile, the Danube and the Rio de la Plata.

As we wandered through the square, a street performer started to blow bubbles through the air.

Bubbles seem to bring out the child in everyone, but after a good couple of minutes trying to catch them on our fingertips, we were ready to move on.

A few streets over, we found ourselves in front of the Pantheon.

Huge, ancient and stately, the Pantheon takes up most of Piazza della Rotonda. We took a quick whip round, but only after Felicity had finished horsing about.

The domed roof of the Pantheon has a large hole in the middle, which is its main light source. It’s humbling to stand inside and think of just how old it is, and how many people before you have stood looking up at that ceiling.

From the Pantheon, we wove our way through the midday crowds to the Trevi Fountain.

One of my favourite Roman attractions, you have to fight through the crowds to reach the fountain, but it’s worth it. The sheer size takes you completely aback on first encounter, and the positioning of the facade means the stone almost glows from the sunlight.

We grabbed some pizza from a local cafe and attempted to eat it on the benches surrounding the fountain, but were quickly told “No Pizza on the Monument!!” so we stepped away quickly...

...to the Spanish steps!

Possibly the most perfect people watching spot in Rome, we sat ourselves down and took in the view.

As nice as gawping at all the tourists and beautiful people was, it couldn’t compare with the view when we got to the top:

After all those steps, we were in need of a drink. We popped into Il Palazzetto for a cool drink and a bask on their roof terrace.

^ My beautiful holiday romances.

Cheers!

With an exciting evening planned ahead of us, it was time to head home. We'd planned to stop via the Vatican for a quick trip around St Peter's.

We skipped our way up to the Vatican...

...took one look at the queue and decided we’d save St Peter’s for another day.

Maybe next time!

For our evening plans we were headed off to the Vatican Museums, but as always, I took far too many photos. I'll save you from any further rambling - for now!
